DOUBLE EDGE SWORD

Get ready for a little mini series today …..

There’s not a living human being, living or have lived on this earth, who doesn’t struggle with fear. And yet so many look at business owners and entrepreneurs and think for some reason they are immune to fear.

So today I’m going to let you in on a little secret, we feel fear just like anyone else (or maybe to be more correct, I feel fear just like anyone else)! The fact is everyone of us feels fear and it’s how we deal with it that determines our success.

2018 has not been the year I thought it would be, it started out awesome and slowly it’s taken it’s own twists and turns in different areas of our lives. We’re here in Hong Kong at the moment with visa issues with the very real possibility that if they do not grant us a visa today, we will be heading back to NZ just to process the paperwork. Now that is definitely not life threatening for us and yet it does threaten our lives that we have built over the past five years. The bureaucracy and inefficiency of it all drives me nuts. And it has really helped me get clear on how my fears manifest. There is definitely a fear of the unknown, along with a very big fear around the fact that over here I have little or no control over so many things. A fear that no matter even when you think you’ve done everything right, it could still all be wrong and you just don’t know what to expect.

For me, this has been a great opportunity to take the time to just “be” with my fears to actually see for myself and remind myself, how I deal with fear and to heighten my awareness around my fears and reactions to fear that I have.

And, here’s what I’ve come up with so far. Fear is truly a double edged sword, having both a constructive and destructive side associated with it. And yep you might ask, since when is fear constructive? For me, when it helps you see three things that I have seen …

(1) how lucky you are even in change, unknown and fear.
(2) there’s always another solution, another choice to make.
(3) you are stronger than you think, when it really matters.

Instead of focusing on the negative of fear, you can learn to focus on the positive of fear. By being aware of what the two sides mean to you, you can look for that other side. Instead of letting fear take over every minute of your day in worry and anxiety, allowing it to paralyse you into inaction and negativity, you can turn it around and convert all that anxious, nervous energy and focus into defined action steps, in the face of fear, that will lead you out of where you are and keep you moving towards achieving your goals.

When we let the destructive side of fear plant seeds, we get into a loop of anxiousness and worry about what you might lose, we focus on the cost in time, energy and money. We totally forget about what you will gain on the other side. Yep been there, done that!

So, today if fear is in any way holding you back, keeping you stuck, remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. Focus on what you’ll gain when you walk through the fear, when you successfully achieve your goal. Most likely, what you gain will completely overshadow what you “might” lose!
