What makes you happier, experiences or stuff (things)?
I generally vote for “experiences” and while I don’t think there’s a perfect right answer for everyone, it’s something that I think is worth exploring for each of us. So, here’s some interesting ideas – 4 key reasons why I believe experiences are more important than stuff!

(1) According to research, over time, people’s satisfaction with the things they buy decreases, whereas their satisfaction with experiences over time increases. Totally agree with this, as things after a while tend to just become dust collectors, while memories can be recalled at a moments notice, usually!

(2) Stuff also takes up physical and mental space. Experiences, on the other hand, are accompanied with little to no physical baggage. Although I must admit my photo albums of experiences do tend to take up space. I found them so very hard to leave behind, when leaving NZ. Thank goodness for technology today in this respect.

(3) A bonus, it seems, is that we don’t compare experiences in the same way that we compare things, which in my book is a good thing, less judgement and “keeping up with the Joneses”. For me experiences are unique and enjoyable beginning from that very first moment of anticipation and planning, all the way through to the memories recalled years later and cherished forever. Nobody can experience it the same way ever!

(4) Think too, when we are no longer purchasing, pursuing, and caring for excess stuff in life, what might we be able to do with the excess money, time, and energy?
I am so grateful that over the years, we’ve been able to experience so much. It has opened up our world, expanded our whanau (family), created a whole new perspective of life. Enjoying memorable experiences together as a family has been and remains pretty much on the top of my list of experiences.
